Jostedalsbreen National Park: Chasing Glaciers and Quiet Trails

When you think of Norway, images of towering fjords and pristine glaciers likely pop into your mind. But if you’relooking for the ultimate slice of ice-covered heaven, look no further than Jostedalsbreen National Park. It’s home to the largest glacier in mainland Europe. Whether you’re seeking adventure or simply want to soak in breathtaking landscapes, Jostedalsbreen has something for everyone.

What is Jostedalsbreen National Park?  

Jostedalsbreen National Park is an awe-inspiring protected area located in western Norway. At its heart lies the mighty Jostedalsbreen Glacier, which spans an impressive 487 square kilometers (yes, it’s massive).  

Imagine this for a second—you’re standing in the shadow of icy blue walls that stretch as far as the eye can see, nestled amongst dramatic valleys and lush greenery. It’s a magical contrast that feels almost otherworldly.

The park is a favorite amongst visitors, not just for its views but for its variety of activities. Hiking, glacier walks, wildlife spotting—you name it, it’s here.  

Where is Jostedalsbreen National Park?  

Okay, let’s talk logistics. Jostedalsbreen National Park is located in the Sogn og Fjordane region in western Norway. If you’re coming from Bergen, Norway’s second-largest city, it’s roughly a 4-5 hour drive. Trust me, the road trip alone is part of the adventure—prepare for charming villages, cascading waterfalls, and winding roads with jaw-dropping views around every turn.

The park can also be accessed from nearby towns like Stryn and Sogndal, both of which have great accommodation options for every type of traveler.  

Why is Jostedalsbreen National Park Special?  

What sets Jostedalsbreen National Park apart? A lot, actually.

Jostedalsbreen is not just one giant glacier; it’s a sprawling network of ice arms extending into valleys. Among them, the Briksdal Glacier is perhaps the most famous (more on that soon). These “arms” make the park feel like a glacial wonderland with new surprises at every turn.

My Troll Car Adventure at Briksdal Glacier  

Now, I have to tell you about one of my favorite parts of visiting Jostedalsbreen National Park—my Troll Car ride up to the Briksdal Glacier.  

What is a Troll Car?  

Before you get any funny ideas, no, these aren’t actual cars driven by trolls (though how fun would that be?). A Troll Caris a small, open-air vehicle designed to transport visitors up the winding paths to the glacier. Think of a golf cart—but in beast mode. These sturdy little cars save you a long hike and are perfect for anyone who wants to experience the glacier up close without breaking too much of a sweat.  

Who Should Take a Troll Car Ride?  

Honestly? Everyone. But it’s especially great if you’re traveling with kids, elderly family members, or anyone who justisn’t up for a steep trek. That said, even if you can hike, I’d still recommend the Troll Car—it’s a fun, quirky experience that adds an extra layer of adventure.  

How Much Does a Troll Car Ride Cost?  

Troll Car rides to Briksdal Glacier cost around 250-300 NOK per person (roughly $25-$30 USD). I know it might sound a bit steep, but trust me, the experience is worth every penny. The ride is filled with scenic views, bubbly commentary from your guide, and plenty of photo-worthy moments. And when you reach the top? The view of Briksdal Glacier will leave you speechless.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit  

If you’re heading to Jostedalsbreen National Park, here are some tips to ensure you have the best experience possible:

1. Plan for the Weather  

Norwegian weather can be unpredictable, so dress in layers and bring a waterproof jacket (because rain will find you).  

1. Bring Comfortable Shoes  

Even if you’re taking a Troll Car, you’ll still need to do some walking near the glaciers. Sturdy, comfy shoes are a must.  

1. Book Activities in Advance  

From guided glacier walks to kayaking on glacial lakes, many activities require advance booking. Be sure to plan ahead, especially in the summer when tourism peaks.  

1. Pack Snacks  

While there are cafes nearby, they’re not always close to the glacier sites. Having a few snacks and some water in your bag can keep you fueled for adventure without breaking the bank.
