How Do I Take the Nærøyfjord Cruise?

There are two main ways to experience this liquid masterpiece:

1. Start in Flåm and end in Gudvangen.  

You can hop on a cruise starting in Flåm, and bonus—if you’re feeling fancy, take the Flåm Railway while you are in Flam. They call that train ride “the prettiest in the world.” Is it, though? I took it, and I’ve got all the tea in another blog (read it after this because… priorities).  

Option 2: From Gudvangen to Flåm  

This is the route I took, and honestly, it was a vibe. Starting in Gudvangen lets you explore the Viking Valley, where you can geek out on Viking history and even stay in the Viking-themed hotel. If you’ve got time, drop by the reconstructed Viking Village for the full experience — a theater-worthy glimpse into ancient Norse life.  

Both options include a shuttle service, so round-trip logistics are straightforward. Easy-peasy, fjord-squeezy.

There’s also a shuttle bus between Flåm and Gudvangen for the return trip if you’re cruising one way—more on that later.

What Will You See on the Nærøyfjord Cruise?

Good question. It really depends on the weather, and this is Norway we’re talking about, so buckle up for drama.  

• Waterfalls: Cascades galore. Some of them are so close you’ll wonder if you’re about to star in the next Adventures in Babysitting sequel.  
• Mountains: Sheer cliffs rising straight out of the water. These peaks mean business.  
• Villages: Cute little towns dotted along the fjord, straight out of a postcard.

Full disclosure, the weather was wild during my cruise. I’m talking misty, foggy, and rainy (standard Norwegian vibes, even in summer). For most of the ride, I couldn’t see jack squat. But then, like magic, the fog lifted toward the end, and I was blessed with five solid minutes of jaw-dropping views.

Should You Ride the Cruise One-Way or Round-Trip?  

Hack alert! Unless you’re fjord-obsessed and have extra time to kill, the cruise is plenty jaw-dropping as a one-way trip. Two hours is more than enough time to soak in the epic views without hitting that “okay, I’ve seen it” point. Plus, you can jump back onto the shuttle bus and explore your next destination.
